The Institute of Localisation Professionals

The Institute of Localisation Professionals (TILP) has the primary aim to develop professional practices in localisation globally. TILP is a non-profit organisation, owned by its members and lead by a Council elected at its Annual General Meeting.

About LttN 

Charta

1.  To source teaching material in the form of tools and programmes in the area of localisation and related areas from the localisation industry

2.   To share localisation curricula and teaching materials such as:

  • Translation memories  

  • Term banks

  • On-line courses and other relevant documents  

  • Printed courses and other relevant documents  

  • Tools developed by participating LttN member institutions  

3.    To organise guest lectures by LttN member institutions, to facilitate student placements with the localisation industry, and to organise in-company training for LttN member institutions

4.    To organise and raise funds for joint research projects by LttN member institutions and joint student projects e.g. in the area of translation memories, terminological dictionaries, standardisation of terminologies in use

5.    To encourage research into localisation-related topics

6.    To hold the Annual Localisation Research Conference, in coordination with the Localisation Research Centre (LRC)

7.    To publish the International Journal for Localisation

8.    To contribute to and apply the Certification System that will be established by The Institute of Localisation Professionals (TILP)  

There are three levels of membership and access to the web site:

(1) General access area - contains general information on the LttN, with a membership registration form

(2) Members' area - for members of academic organisations who have filled in the registration form and whose information has been verified by TILP, i.e. those who have already become members of the LttN.

Organisation

The LttN was originally hosted by the Localisation Research Centre (LRC). However, since September 2004, the
LttN is a special interest group of The Institute of Localisation Professionals (TILP) and as such it now operates under the auspices of TILP.

Becoming a member of LttN

Registration for membership can be done by filling out the registration form on LttN’s website.
Terms and conditions for membership will be determined by the Standing Committee.

Standing Committee

The LttN has a standing committee. This committee consists of the following members:

  • Austin Community College (Tim Altanero)
  • Canadian Bureau of Translation (Donald Barabé)  
  • Dublin City University (Sharon O’Brien)  
  • Erasmushogeschool Brussels (Martine Baetens)  
  • Localisation Research Centre (Reinhard Schäler)  
  • Maastricht School of International Communication, Zuyd University (Marcel Thelen & Han van de Staay)
  • University of Leeds (Tony Hartley)  
  • Université de Montréal (Rita Damiani)  
  • University of Sterling (Irene Malcolm)

The committee meets at least once a year in order to discuss matters relevant to LttN.

The committee decides on such matters of registration, terms and conditions for membership and sharing materials with member institutions, etc.

Obtaining materials from LttN  - The LttN Repository

The LttN maintains a repository of teaching, training and research material to help members to improve or add to their own material. The material in the repository remains the copyright of the original authors. Access to it will be restricted and regulated by the LttN Standing Committee.

    Contents

This material includes, but is not restricted to:  

  • Localisation lab exercises – exercise and tutorial instructions used by localisation students during their lab sessions
  • Localisation assignments and projects – instructions given to students for the completion of small assignments or more substantive project work
  • Lecture notes – notes used by lecturers and tutors for localisation classes either in the form of transparencies or typed notes
  • Projects – Projects describe work to be carried out by students without supervision within a specified period of time. Projects generally have deliverables which are marked

    Access

Members will have to apply to the LttN to gain access to the repository. In order to qualify, they will have to show that:  

  • Their organisation is a recognised, non-profit making university or similar academic third level institution
  • Their organisation has been running a localisation-related course or course module for a period of at least two years
  • The relevant course or module runs over a period of at least 12 weeks with an average of two lectures and two practical laboratory sessions per week or equivalent

    Application

Applicants will have to submit the following with their application:    

  • Applicant identification sheet with details of their organisation, the department offering the course and the contact person submitting the application
  • Outline description of the relevant localisation related course or module offered by the organisation
  • Sample of (a) laboratory exercises, (b) assignments / projects and (c) lecture notes used in the relevant course;
  • Undertaking that they will (a) submit material to the repository on a regular basis, (b) contribute to an annual workshop and (c) attend at least one meeting annually.

Access rights of an organisation to the repository can be revoked by the Standing Committee.
