LRC XIII Conference Localisation4All (02-03 October 2008)

LRC XIII, the 13th Internationalisation and Localisation Conference organised by the Localisation Research Centre, will take place on 02-03 October 2008 at the Marino Institute of Education in Drumcondra, Dublin, Ireland with a pre-conference day taking place in Dublin on 01 October. The theme for this year's conference will be Localisation4All, and the conference will focus on the provision of quality localisation services for people world-wide.

The first day of the conference will feature two parallel streams. The first stream will look at the European Funded TechLink project while the second stream will provide a one-day introduction to localisation hosted by academic and industrial experts.

The second day of the conference will explore the idea of "Localisation4All". The concept that good quality localisation should be made available to people world wide as a necessity for their inclusion in the multilingual digital world. This day will feature presentations, talks and discussions on the initiatives and ideas that are aimed at facilitating and improving localisation and localisation processes for people regardless of their location or financial situation.

Publishers’ Engineering Network Meetings 2007
The Institute of Localisation Professionals (TILP) is organising a series of highly interactive Engineering Network Meetings for publishers of software and other digital content for international markets. These meetings will take place in the first half of 2007 and will offer a unique opportunity for engineering and QA groups of publishers to meet in a non-competitive collaborative environment.

Symantec Ireland will host a session outlining their current Software QA process for their localised consumer products. In recent years, due to an increasing number of products and languages, and the demand for simultaneous ship, the Localisation QA group has had to continually review and streamline their QA process. Another contributing factor, which has presented challenges to their QA process, has been the move to an outsource model, whereby the majority of QA testing is now performed in low cost locations. These factors have resulted in a number of changes to their software QA process, including changes to reflect the “control and audit” role of the in-house team, and an increased emphasis on QA tools and automation.

This session will cover the following topics:

  • The Symantec Software Localization QA process
  • Outsourcing – The challenges this presents, and how we address those challenges
  • Software QA technologies – QA Tools and Automation

Maintaining Leadership - The Irish Localisation Directors' Forum
(Coordinated by TILP Fellow Brian Kelly)

The Institute of Localisation Professionals (TILP) is organising the Irish Localisation Directors’ Forum, coordinated by TILP Fellow Brian Kelly, that will bring together decision makers in the Irish-based localisation industry to assess and develop Ireland’s position in the localisation industry.

15 May 2007, 08.00-13.00 (Dinner 14 May)
Carton House, Maynooth, Co. Kildare

Ireland is still seen by many as the Mecca of localisation (Prof Kenneth Kenniston, MIT), localisation being arguably the only industry in which the rest of the world looks to Ireland for leadership and new concepts (John Sterne, Adventures in Code, The Story of the Irish Software Industry).

However, there is a perception that low-cost countries are threatening Ireland’s position as a world leader in localisation, some companies are moving their labour-intensive localisation work to India, China and Eastern Europe.

This Irish Localisation Forum will:

  • Assess the current state of affairs in the Irish-based localisation industry
  • Identify strategic key areas for the development of localisation activities in Ireland
  • Recommend actions to maintain and develop Ireland’s leadership
